Music has always been a way for me to express emotions that are difficult to put into words. Like many people, there are times when a song says exactly what I am feeling, even when I struggle to find the words myself. Sometimes music helps me process grief, joy, hope, or uncertainty. Other times, it helps tell a story in a way that words alone cannot. Think of a favorite movie scene made more powerful by its soundtrack, or a piece of music that moved you without a single word being spoken.

As I prepare music for worship each week, I often think about this unique power of music. The words of a hymn or choir anthem matter, but there is something about hearing those words sung that can reach us differently. Music has a way of touching a deeper part of ourselves and helping us experience an idea, not just understand it.

This Sunday, we will celebrate Music Sunday by exploring our Unitarian Universalist values through song and reflection. Through music, we will consider justice, equity, transformation, pluralism, interdependence, generosity, and love—not only as principles we affirm, but as values we can feel, embody, and carry into the world.

I hope you’ll join us as we explore the ways music helps us connect with one another, with our values, and perhaps even with parts of ourselves that words alone cannot reach.
